WHY KEEP A SUMMER JOURNAL? Hi {!name}! This is going to be a brief newsletter just because it is too nice outside to read emails.
Summer is a time to travel, either to places of interest and fun in your town or state, to friends and family or on a family vacation. And it is the best time to spend time with your kids, because your communication with them along with experiencing new places and things is what increases their language and understanding of the world around them. In turn, this is what increases their reading skills.
When my daughter was in college I taught in a town a couple hours from Chicago. Most of the kids came from families where English was their 2nd language and most of the parents were not literate in their 1st language.
The remedial reading kids, in 3rd grade, had never been to a zoo, botanical garden or play. Their experiences were so limited and so were their vocabulary and reading skills. Developing Language Arts thru experience is the foundation on which excellent readers are built.
By your children keeping a journal of their summer experiences they will expand their learning and become more aware of their environment. Then they could use the journal as a night time reading book.
