I. What to Ask at Parent-Teacher Conference

Parent-Teacher conferences will begin soon at your school or one has already taken place. If you have already had your 1st parent conference and have not asked these questions, then make an appointment with your child's teacher. When you know what the teacher expects of your children, you are able to help them to have a successful academic year.

Take this list with you to your next parent-teacher conference. And don't forget to take notes. Some of the questions more applicable to children in 1st grade or older.

  1. What knowledge and skills will my child be expected to learn this year?

What key concepts will my child learn in the subjects like math, science, history, and English? Yes, even in pre-school teachers have a curriculum to follow.

What are the academic standards for this school districts and how do they compare to other school districts? May I have a copy of them?

How do you inform preschool students about the academic standards they're expected to meet? What kind of projects and assignments have you planned that will help my child meet higher academic standards?

  2. How is a child evaluated?

What kind of information do you use to evaluate students?

How are grades determined in your classroom?

Are students involved / present at a one-on-one parent-teacher conference?

  3. What is my role in helping my child to have a successful year in school?

What can I do at home to complement what is happening in the classroom?

How can I know on a daily basis what homework has been assigned?

How can I support teachers' efforts in implementing higher academic standards?

  4. How do you accommodate differences in learning?

What if my child is a slow learner and falls behind, or is a fast learner and is bored?

Does the school provide after school programs such as tutoring for students who need more help?

As a former teacher I must add my two cents! Beware! Studies have shown that when you focus on your child's successes, the other areas of academic learning improve. But if you talk with your child about the areas that they find challenging, their grades drop in all subjects. And that is true of teachers conversations with your child.

II. Holiday Gift Selection - Award Winning Science Kits

Young Scientist Club Science Kits
Finally science kits for the 5 - 8 year old! You can purchase them individually or all at once. The Young Scientists Club's Award-Winning Hands-on Science Kits were designed by a team of scientists, Harvard graduates, educators and parents. They have won 5 distinctive awards. Look and see.

III. Book of the Month for Kids

The New 2006 Children's Book List has just been published, listing favorite books of teachers, libraries and children. This list is published every October. If you do now have Acrobat Reader, here is a free download.

Holidays are coming and because I was a reading specialist, I believe that giving a book as a gift is one of the best ideas on the planet. So here is one of the Children Choice Award books.

The First Day of Winter by Denise FlemingThe Reading Railroad - The First Day of Winter by Denise Fleming
Denise Fleming's book, The First Days of WinterThe First Days of Winter by Denise Fleming, celebrates the season and all of winter's creatures. It is told in rhythm reminiscent of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Children love the drawings where the characters are shown from different perspectives.

Look at The Reading Railroad Back Issues for more holiday gift giving ideas.

III. Is there such a thing as an educational toy for kids?
The holidays are approaching and it is time to start thinking about presents. The question occurred to me one day when I was writing an article for parents on the benefits of toys, directing them to my web sites. Being an educator, my conscious started working overtime, so I did some research. Here is the article and the results.... Educational toys for children, myth or advertisement ploy?

IV. What’s YOUR Story? – Tell us!

How have the ideas in the Reading Railroad has been helpful? We would love to hear your success story and put it in the newsletter so others can benefit from your experience!
