I. Fun Ways to Build Skills

All Sorts of Sorting
While you're busy folding, let your child help sort the laundry by color, size or kind of clothing. When you unload the dish rack or dishwasher, your helper can sort the forks and spoons into their proper drawer compartments.

Kids in the Kitchen
Young children love to roll up their sleeves and take orders from you in the Explain new cooking terms and read aloud recipes so your helpers can follow the sequence.

Props for Pretending Let your children walk in your shoes - literally! Save your old clothing and accessories for their pretend play.

Set Up Shop with Signs
Delight a little carpenter by taping up a sign for Ben's Fix-It Shop. Perhaps Emily the Animal Doctor can letter her own sign. She may invent her own spelling or ask for your help.

Shopping Lotto
Give your children coupons to match up with items as you move down the supermarket aisles. They can point from the cart, pick up items as they walk alongside.

(Part 2 in December)

II. Holiday Gift Selection - Award Winning Science Kits

Young Scientist Club Science Kits
Finally science kits for the 5 - 8 year old! You can purchase them individually or all at once. The Young Scientists Club's Award-Winning Hands-on Science Kits were designed by a team of scientists, Harvard graduates, educators and parents. They have won 5 distinctive awards. Look and see. Fun Games and upbeat music!

III. Book of the Month for Kids

The New 2005 Children's Book List has just been published, listing favorite books of teachers, libraries and children. This list is published every October. If you do now have Acrobat Reader, here is a free download.

Holidays are coming and because I was a reading specialist, I believe that giving a book as a gift is one of the best ideas on the planet. So here is one of my favorites.

The Reading Railroad Good in Between
Award winning book, God In Between, by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso asks the question, "If you wanted to find God, where would you look?"

This is the magical, mythicl tale of a poor village at the foot of a hill - topsy-turvy town with no roas and no windows, where the people sneeze through tall tangled weeds and trip over rocks as big as watermelons. Surely God would help them, they decide... but how can God be found, where and should they look? They soon find the answer is much nearer than they thought.

This inspiring story teaches that God can be found where we rae: within all of us and the relationships between us. Ages 4 and up.

Look at The Reading Railroad Back Issues for more holiday gift giving ideas.

III. Is there such a thing as an educational toy for kids?
The holidays are approaching and as a grandparent it is time to start thinking about presents. The question occurred to me one day when I was writing an article for parents on the benefits of toys, directing them to my web sites. Being an educator, my conscious started working overtime, so I did some research. Is is the article and the results.... Educational toys for children, myth or advertisement ploy?

IV. What’s YOUR Story? – Tell us!

How have the ideas in the Reading Railroad has been helpful? We would love to hear your success story and put it in the newsletter so others can benefit from your experience!
