I. How to Get Your Kids to want to Read

Here's how you can make reading a part of your kids' everyday lives.

  1. . Show your kids that reading will introduce them to new people, take them to faraway places, and let them travel through time. Start a family or neigborhood book group.
  2. Sign up your kids (and yourself) for a book club.
  3. Print out these fun bookmarks!
  4. Make the connection between fact and fiction for your kids. If they loved Stellaluna, point them toward this quiz on bats.
  5. Have your kids recommend their favorite books to friends and get their friends' recommendations.
  6. Turn your kids into supersleuths. After they read a book, they can create an unbreakable, crazy code.
  7. Be sneaky! Take our kids on a "book nick." It's kind of like a picnic, only better!
  8. Remember that practice makes perfect. Help your kids practice rhyming words, drawing lines and shapes, and moving their eyes and hands from left to right.

II. Storytelling

Odds Bodkin is an award-winning master storyteller and author who started his career by telling his kids stories. His stories are filled high adventure to light-hearted humor, with amazing character voices, sound effects, and musical instruments. He has recorded fourteen audiocassettes for the Odds Bodkin Story Library, and has authored four children's books. Here's his advise on how to tell stories to your kids:
The easiest way is to have the characters of your stories be the star. When Odds was speaking in Salt Lake City a woman asked him to create a story for her two year old son, Wyatt. She wanted the story to hold Wyatt's attention. So he told a story about a boy named Wyatt who had a magic button at the bottom of his blue stroller that allowed him to fly, while his mother chased after him trying to get him to land. The mother reported to Odss that when she told the story her son Wyatt smiled and was absolutely charmed, because he was in it.

Very young children adore this.

Another way is to tell stories about you -- your memories and family history. Children are endlessly fascinated to know who their parents are and what they experienced as children. With a little practice, you can move from telling stories from personal memory to adding a little fanciful detail and making up stories right off the top of your head.

Start at bedtime. Tucking your child into bed, after the hustle and bustle of the day, is a time when a profound spiritual intimacy between parent and child can take place through telling stories.

III. Site of the Month

For 25 years Aristoplay has been committed to keeping the excitement in learning. They create games that are the best in fun and learning. You will have great family time while playing a game and at the same time stimulate learning and skill building.

IV. Book of the Month for Kids

Hands are not for Hitting Hands Are Not For HittingHand Are Not for Hitting
Hands are for saying hello. . . .” And for playing, creating, helping, working, learning, encouraging, taking care of oneself, and so many more good things.

In this gentle, encouraging book, psychologist Martine Agassi helps young children understand that they are capable of positive, loving actions.

Simple words and warm, inviting full-color illustrations reinforce the underlying concepts: that violence is never okay, and kids can learn to manage their anger.
